Canadian rapper Drake delivers a softer side with his new song “Take Care,” which was released this past Valentine’s Day. The rapper teamed up with pop princess Rihanna for the second time following their hit “Whose that Chick?” off her album “Loud” in 2010. This time around it is Rihanna who lends her voice to one of Drake’s tracks, which has been getting a lot of radio play considering it wasn’t supposed to be a single. The song captures Drake’s melodramatic tone but is uplifted by Rihanna’s soulful voice, which serves as a “sweet counterpart.”
Drake’s sophomore album of the same name was released last fall and debuted at number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart due to strong digital download sales of over 162,000 copies. Glenn Gamboa of “Newsday” labeled the song as “gorgeous,” writing that Rihanna’s lifts the depressive mood which is present on the majority of Drake’s songs. “Take Care” became Rihanna’s twenty-first top ten hit in the United States and continues her immense success. The strong sales of the song prompted “Take Care” to debut at number four on the US Hot Digital Songs chart.
A music video for the single was shot last month, but has yet to be released. The duo’s rumored romance was put on hold last week when Rihanna and ex-boyfriend Chris Brown publicly sent tweets to each other and planned to reunite on two songs. Whether or not this may be a bad idea is anyone’s guess as the former couple broke up after Brown infamously assaulted Rihanna prior to the 2009 Grammy Awards.
